Obituary

J. Wayne Nordin, age 100 years and 25 days, of Russellville, passed away at home on Thursday, January 20, 2022, holding his daughter's hand.

He was born December 25, 1921, in Russellville to the late Bryan and Laura Rachel Nordin.

He was a member of the Church of Christ faith, American Legion Post #20 and United Commercial Travelers, as well as other clubs and boards during his early adulthood.  He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, honored as the oldest living veteran in Russellville last November.

He served as Pope County Judge for 8 years. During his tenure he was an original signer for the Certificate of Incorporation for ARVAC, the Pope County Ambulance Service originated, the Dardanelle Dam was completed and Arkansas Nuclear One was begun.  He was extremely proud to be a part of the progress of Pope County.

He was married to Inez Smith for over 54 years.  More than 50 of those years they owned and operated peach orchards, the last being "Nordin's U Pic Em" orchard on Skyline Drive.  They enjoyed meeting folks from all around who came to get a peck of peaches to have fresh for breakfast or bushels to put in the freezer to eat all year long.  He had lots of knowledge about how to care for peach trees to get the most yield and was always willing to share information with interested listeners.  He loved getting together with family and friends and was always willing to "pick up a bucket of chicken".

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Inez; two brothers, Kenneth and Milton; a sister, Christine; and a son-in-law, H.L. (Al) Polsgrove.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherry E. Polsgrove of Russellville; two step-granddaughters, Andrea Polsgrove and Angela Haynie, both of Bryant; one step-great-grandson, Hunter Polsgrove of Atlanta, Georgia; one step-great-granddaughter, Presley Haynie of Bryant; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at the Shinn Chapel with the Rev. Larry Pless, the Rev. Chris Russell, and the Rev. Jonathan Whitlock officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Roger-Rye Post 2283.  Burial will be in East Point Cemetery under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00-6:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Kerry Nordin, David Nordin, Paul Nordin, Don Smith, Ben Cross, David Metz, Tommy Metz, and Matt Duffield.

Honorary pallbearers will be Corey Helton of Kindred Hospice and caregivers, Jessica Hunter, Marilyn Collins, Jeremy Ridgley, Stacy Alverson and Nicole Lea, all of whom became family and have been very appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, since winter weather is painful to them, memorials may be made to Arkansas Baptist Children's Homes and Family Ministries, 10 Remington Dr, Little Rock, Arkansas 72204, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-1905, ATU Foundation, 1509 North Boulder, Room 206, Russellville, Arkansas 72801, or a charity near to your heart.
