James "JP" Phillips, age 78, of Pottsville, died Thursday, January 4, 2024, at his home.  He was born July 17, 1945, in Fort Douglas to Gus and Pearlie Stone Phillips.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and rarely missed a ball game or function.  James would make "his rounds" and socialize with anyone who would stand still and listen. He enjoyed driving on country roads with his family and friends and took great pride in his profession as a truck driver.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Phillips; and numerous brothers, sisters and extended family.

Survivors include a daughter, Dee White of Russellville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Shelby and Cassandra Phillips of Pottsville and Shannon Dale Phillips of Dover; eight grandchildren, Derek Race, Brent Race (Mallory), Taylor Phillips, Colby Phillips, Kaitlyn Tanner, Jessica Powell, Clayton Roper and Haley Sutterfield; 3 great-grandchildren, Pierson Tanner, Liam Powell Mason Powell and one great-grandchild on the way.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Pisgah Cemetery with David Downum and under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville. At the family's request, dress is comfortable and casual.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to any local animal shelter of the donor's choosing in memory of James love for animals.
