Maxie "Max" Mathis Jr., age 77, of Russellville died Sunday, February 26, 2023, at his home.  He was born November 8, 1945, in Russellville to Maxie Leroy and Billie June Bowen Mathis.

He was a United State Army Veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and taught school at Plainview and then went on to teach at Russellville for almost 40 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Martin Mathis.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Maxie L. Mathis III and Stephanie Mathis of Russellville; and two grandsons, Brock Martin Mathis and Bowen Reed Mathis.

The memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tony Griffith and the Rev. Sarah Lowenberg and under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service. The graveside service in Oakland Cemetery will be private for the family.

The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the church.
